IoT: Connectivity & Sensing – COM SCI 97 Lec 3
This Track will be tentatively offered in SUMMER 2027.
This 3-week course is designed to give students a hands-on introduction on Internet of Things (IoT) technologies focusing on connectivity and sensing aspects.
Imagine a world where billions of connected devices — from wearable sensors to smart farms and cities — continuously sense, communicate, and interact with their environment. This course introduces students to the Internet of Things (IoT), focusing on how physical devices collect information and exchange it wirelessly to enable intelligent systems.
Students will explore how sensors and smart devices work together with modern connectivity technologies to monitor real-world systems in areas such as smart homes, healthcare, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. Through interactive lectures, hands-on labs, and guided mini-projects, students will gain practical experience with sensor integration, wireless communication, and cloud-based IoT platforms. The course emphasizes connectivity technologies including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LoRa, RFID, and GPS, as well as emerging applications shaping the connected world of tomorrow.
The course culminates in the final week with a capstone project, where students will design, build, and analyze a fully functional IoT system that leverages both hardware and software skills learned throughout the program.

Track 4 – Program Requirements
for SUMMER 2027 –
Coursework Prerequisites: The required prerequisite for this course is Algebra II. Familiarity with high school Physics, introductory calculus concepts, and basic probability is recommended but not required. Basic exposure to any programming language is preferred. To support inclusivity and accessibility, all necessary programming concepts will be introduced through dedicated instructional modules during the course
Recommended for high school: Grade 10 through Grade 12
Application period: TBA – Summer 2027
Requirements:
GPA minimum requirements: 3.5
All participants for this program must be a minimum of 15 years of age by the first day of Summer Sessions 2026 on June 22nd, with no exception
Full application and high school transcript must be submitted in the application form
